Where Eduard specify "Aluminium" as the overall colour, i suspect this was painted, not bare metal, which seems to be borne out by that photo.
 
Yes, I had another look, and there is possible evidence of bare metal. That said, at this period, "Aluminium" paint was the norm, rather than bare meatl, and I've seen pics of Tempests (and Spits) finished in the paint.
Of course, there is also evidence of aircraft being just stripped back to bare metal too.
