The Fokker Dr. I's similarity to the Sopwith Triplane could act both in favour of and against its pilots in the early days of deployment.
On the 29th of October 1917, Jasta 11 pilot Vfw Josef Lautenschlager's Dr. I 113/17 was accidentally shot down by a pilot from another Jagdstaffel, and it crashed north of Houthulst Forest.
The Dr. I had arrived at Marckebeeke as part of initial shipment of 17 triplanes around nine days later.

The funeral of Vfw Josef Lautenschlager was held at 1500 hours on the 3rd of November 1917.
The marker reveals that he was born on the 12 of March 1892 in Residential, in Bavaria.
As was often the custom, this airman's grave was marked with a scrap propeller.
