Led by S/Ldr Pietraszkiewicz were F/Lt Mickiewicz, F/O Wolinski, Sgt Chudek, P/O Miksa, Sgt Cwynar, P/O Andersz, P/O Gil, Sgt Malczewski, Sgt Adamiak and Sgt Krieger. Takeoff at 6:30 a.m. Rendezvouz with bombers at 18K over Rye. "Bric bats" (315's code name) flew at 21000 feet. With engine malfunction, S/Ldr Pietraszkiewicz peeled off and landed at Hawking. F/Lt Mickiewicz took over the command of the squadron. All the way to the target, only light flak was a sole sign of the German defense. After Blenheims unloaded the whole formation was attacked by numerous e/a. Section led by F/Lt Mickiewicz lagged behind the Wing and fought a heavy fight with Bf-109s. F/Lt Mickiewicz safely landed in Belgium in a badly shot-up a/c. He became POW. He was the only loss for 315. Sgt Chudek recorded 2 Bf-109s destroyed and 1 Bf-109 probable. P/O Andersz got 1 Bf-109 damaged.

Below are scans of photographs taken by Bruno Pischetsrieder, an amateur photographer and a German soldier, who witness the moment of F/Lt Mickiewicz's force-landing on the beach of Middelkerke, Belgium, and right in front of the billets of his unit. He even managed to capture the scene of the Polish pilot being accompanied by three German fighters moments before landing ( top left picture). The downed Spitfire bears visible marks oil on the cowling and bullet holes in the fuselage and empennage.
