Serno is actually 43-21627. This makes sense as the 312th didnt get into combat untill 1944 and the "42" indicates a 1942 purchase contract. And thats unlikely as these bombers were used up at a good clip and most would have been gone by the time the 312th got into combat.
As per the book:
"Damaged in a flight line explosion at Nadzab on 7/4/44. Salvaged at Tadji in the 70's."
