I got my pilot's license when I lived in the Los Angeles area. The skies are crowded there! So this news is even more unbelievable to me.

From The Drive:

As if 2020 couldn't get any weirder, airline pilots landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sunday, August 30th, reported seeing "a guy in a jetpack" flying about 300 yards off their wing while on final approach to the bustling airport. What makes the reports even stranger is that, like a scene out of The Rocketeer, the airliners were descending through 3,000 feet when jetpack guy showed up next to them.
Fox 11 broke the story and has the air traffic control audio clips which you can listen to here. The exchanges went like this according to their report:
American Flight 1997: "Tower, American 1997, we just passed a guy in a jetpack."

Tower: "American 1997, OK, thank you. Were they off to your left or right side?"
American Flight 1997: "Off the left side, maybe 300 yards or so, about our altitude."
Fox 11 reports a Skywest pilot confirmed the sighting:
Skywest Flight: "We just saw the guy passing by us in the jetpack."
Then the tower alerted an incoming Jet Blue flight to the reported hazard:
Tower: "Jet Blue 23, use caution, a person in a jetpack reported 300 yards south of the LA final at about 3,000 feet, 10 mile final."
Jet Blue 23: "Jet Blue 23, we heard and we are definitely looking."
Another pilot chimed in: "Only in LA."
The airspace around LAX is some of the busiest and most complex in the United States. Having some dude barreling through the skies in some sort of a jetpack around the approach path to the airport, especially at the same altitude as the aircraft that are making their way through the landing corridor, isn't just bonkers, it's absolutely dangerous.

Saw this earlier and to be honest i thought it was a joke or something !

If some Canadian Geese can knock out Airbus engines I am a pretty sure a human body, jetpack on board or not, will do the same thing to at least one engine.

I recall that in the 1980's it was said that on any given day with good weather 50% of all the air traffic in the world is over Southern California. And if you are up there flying around with it you'll readily believe that, too.

I have an explanation:

I used to fly (VFR) in SoCal back in the late 70' and 80's - it was active (understatement) then and I can't even begin to imagine what a dog and pony show it is nowdays.

I did get a glimpse back in 2013 when I went to Europe via SAC to LAX on to FCO and finally SOF and damn, the traffic at LAX was intense. FCO (Rome) was busy, but nothing like L.A.

A friend of mine is a professional photographer in California. Back in the 80's he had a job to take some shots for a clothing company. The professional model he arranged for did not show up, so he contacted the modeling agency and they scrambled to send a replacement. A beautiful brunette soon showed up, said she lived nearby and apologized that due to the short notice she had not had time to wash her hair. A little while back he was sorting through some of his photos from that era, found the shots from that day and was stunned to realize that the model that day was none other than Jennifer Connelly.

I couldn't remember the name of the pin-up model her character is based on.

The character of Jennifer in the comic books was rather obviously based on Bettie Page.

By the way, I have a Mauser C96 "Broomhandle." Shoots very nice. Terrifying pain to load.
