It's a throwback or continuation to the way the Eastern Bloc ran.

I read of a lady who eventually got out of Czechoslovakia with her parents. During the Soviet era when she was a teen
she would have to line up at a supermarket from as early as three in the morning in winter to be close enough to the
front of the line to get bread and milk. If there wasn't any left and you had extra money to hand under the counter there
could suddenly be a bit left.

Police would pull people over for speeding etc and if a "cash" fine was paid at less than the official amount the whole thing
would go away (it didn't matter if you weren't speeding or whatever - there was little choice.

Why did this go on ? It was the only way to get ahead in that system.

In the Eighties the lady was old enough to get a car. That meant applying for one and waiting up to two years - again if you had
a good amount of cash to hand over the wait time diminished very quickly.

The young lady also applied for a flat to live in but she was told the normal wait was around seven years. In her case she was also
told that her record showed she had asked an awkward question about the system when she was in school so it was likely she
would never be cleared to get a flat anyway (unless of course the record was changed - the way to do that was obvious).

This also explains the disappearance of parts from stored military equipment etc. so not a naive observation at all.
 
Indeed - in the Soviet Bloc, if you were not an ardent supporter of the system, you were placed on low priorory when applying for a vehicle or a flat, even a job promotion, too.

The system was also set up, so even close friends or family members could be rewarded for turning you in for such a mild offense as making negative remarks about the party - even if you didn't.
 
I strongly suggest that Zelenskyy and NATO's European members prepare for possible changes in international support to Ukraine in early 2025. It's pure speculation, but the landscape may be changing. Ukraine must be prepared to fight on, or settle.

His point could be addressed but not without discussing politics hard and firm, and I won't do that, I respect what we have here too much.

A Admiral Beez , if you'd like to hear what I have to say, PM me and we can take it up there, or I can redirect you to another forum or two I post on where the issue is under discussion without rules barring politics.

That's the goal. I've edited my original post.

My point is that Ukraine needs to begin planning how to fight and win this war without US support. I argue it can still be done, as the EU and the rest of NATO less Hungary (and Turkey?) are firmly behind Ukraine.

Ok, just as an educational point, not political - the U.S. President does not have the final say, it is the Congress of the United States that holds the power of "yes or no" on issues.

So let's calm down about the current or future President of the U.S. and their intentions. The U.S. Congress will decide what's going to happen.
