Two reasons - not necessarily in order of importance.
1.The US citizenry, after a significant period of time (since the beginning of the Vietnam war) where they feel they have been misled (a lot) by their government on military matters, are relatively interested in what is happening in Ukraine - as most see it as a just cause. What they are not interested in is being blindsided and treated like mushrooms, while their country's reputation is once again degraded in the eyes of the rest of the world. Also, by being public the current administration is going on record with their stance on the matter, and forcing the opposition to go public and on record with their stance - or the opposition can keep silent.
2. There is a mind game going on between the US/NATO/Ukraine and Russia, along with the strategic and tactical war in Ukraine. Knowing that the US and other nation's long range weapons will soon be striking inside Russia will force the Kremlin to decide where their AA assets are to be deployed. US/NATO intel says that the Russian industrial complex currently has almost no ability to manufacture/replace the more sophisticated AA systems needed to defend against weapons like ATACMS/Stromshadow/SCALP and the wide-spread drone threat. If the Kremlin wishes to defend its cities from the more sophisticated long range weapons then they will have to pull their more capable AA systems away from the Ukraine front. If they choose to keep supplying the more sophisticated AA systems to the front in Ukraine then they will be leaving their cities relatively undefended. Whatever the choice the Kremlin makes, it will be a statement that will make them look bad - ie either they defend the cities and effectively tell their troops that they are not important enough, or they tell the average citizen in their cities that they are not important enough.
Remember, ATACMS is not the only US long range weapon that will be supplied to Ukraine. The AGM-158 JASSM cruise missile will be supplied to Ukraine in the near future.
