I wonder if the wave frequency is like what happens on the great lakes in the winter, the waves on the lakes can be close enough together to lift the bow and stern of a ship leaving no water to support the middle of the ship, thus breaking them apart. I am sure built quality and maintenance come into play also.

Brittle welds bedeviled the T2s and Liberty ships as well. This was exacerbated by how often they had to sail in cold northern waters.
