Just a thought which came to me today. Russia seem to have lost approaching a million men killed and wounded. The UK lost approx. 385,000 dead in the whole of the second world war. In this case Russia cannot be far off losing as many men as the UK over a six year world war.
Didn't a lot of them come from Russian prisons? 34 felonies or more?

To note, their current recruitment strategy is the complete opposite of WWII. Then, the Soviets were reluctant to recruit much from the non-Russian-speaking nations and minorities due to concerns about language skills, loyalty, education, ethnic tensions, etc. The prisoners were drafted, but they were dispersed and not concentrated in the same units (except Shtrafbats - penalty battalions, but those were usually staffed by ex-military personnel, not by civilian criminals).... or North Korea ... or South Asia ... or immigrants shanghaied into service ... or eastern, rural Russians who have less voice in the news cycle ... anyone but Muscovites or Petrograds whose deaths might instigate unrest ...
