That those airframes predate the sanctions, undercutting the article's implication that the sanctions are not working.

Clearly the sanctions are flawed and incomplete, and articles like this are useful in prompting action to further close loopholes, but using inapt examples is not the strongest way to build one's case.

Ok, though remember that the issue isn't just with the original build but also with sustainment. Modern weapons, especially those such as combat aircraft rely on a flow of spares and in these cases, many of those spares would potentially still e coming from countries supposedly sanctioning them.

A fair point. Finding these illicit spares, and tracing their lot numbers and thereby their routings, may help identify and punish violators.

Possibly...but it's a complicated mess. Did Russia have stockpiles of spares before the invasion that they can draw down? Are they lowering fleetwide operational readiness to maintain a smaller combat-ready force (increasing the number of hangar queen/Christmas tree airframes that are used as sources for spares)? Is Russia manufacturing its own spares that are cloned from originals? How many parts are available on the second-, third-, or fourth-hand markets?

It's worth noting that older aircraft can be hard to maintain simply because the chips and other hardware aren't produced any more. We had that issue with the Tonka back in the '90s. Under those circumstances, I think it's pretty likely that Russia may well be making its own spares.

I think Hegseth should have cancelled the F-47 program and kept the F-35 until the DoD has got up to speed with drones but that would mean obtaining intelligence in how to design and operate them from Ukraine and Hegseth will never admit that they are the worlds premium air power when it comes to drone technology.

Probably the only thing I have ever agreed with Elon Musk on is that the F-47 is a dead end and the future is drones. Flown by remotely located aircrew they almost completely eliminate the loss of expensive to train aircrew plus the drone pilots training is far less than the equivalent manned aircraft aircrew training.
