Doesn't this assume that the US both has the will and (given the inventory rapidly being depleted in the Gulf) the means to provide them? Germany might be better off financing non-US air defence tech, such as updated SAMP/T (Aster 30), or at least have a Plan B if the Patriot is not available.

Not a mere chance for the Aster 30 in my opinion : it is a French / Italian system and they certainly won't finance a concurrent system, as they are already too implicated with the the MIM 104.

No, I mean Germany finances the purchase from France/Italy, not competes with them. There is a good chance of a global Patriot shortage, so that needs to be prepared for.

Given that Trump stole a lot of US hardware that had been sold to Germany and other countries for delivery to Ukraine changing to a RELIABLE partner should be a priority. Buying weapons for Ukraine that will be given to Israel should not be considered.

I think the challenge is that IIRC Germany or Europe does not have an equal to the latest Patriot. Assuming the latest model is necessary for the job. Is Germany's MEADS in production? How does SAMP/T compare to Patriot? Are either of these viable alternatives for Ukraine's air defence if Patriot cannot be delivered?

Who'd of thought that the USA would start a war for Israel? That's the power of SIGs, and a reference to the cards the USA told Zelenskyy he didn't have - a lesson Ukraine must take in hand.

I expect Zelenskyy will happily retire with his wife and family the moment the war is firmly over and Ukraine has begun its repairs. He doesn't strike me as power hungry like Orban or Putin, and with a growing democratic tradition the country will be in good hands whomever succeeds Zelenskyy. My Ukrainian-Canadian wife and I fully intend to visit as tourists in the 2030s.
