Is it me or were those dugouts only sparsely defended. There clearly were some holdout Russian soldiers in a couple of them but, otherwise, it didn't appear well defended at all. I'd expect at least team- or section-sized subunits to be deployed to provide mutually supporting fire. I just didn't see that happening in the video.

The Ukrainians seemed to have a pretty good handle on what they were doing, although there was a wee bit of bunching as they advanced, and communication was clearly challenging. That said, they seemed to complete the mission effectively.

Please bear in mind I'm not a soldier and have never been a soldier so my impressions may be way off-target. I'd welcome any thoughts from those who have more pongo-like(*) experience.




(*) Pongo - Royal Air Force and Royal Navy slang for a soldier. Pong is, itself, a British-English slang term for a bad smell. The other Services were wont to declare that "Where the Army goes, the pong goes"....and thus soldiers came to be mockingly known as pongoes.

Also a lot, if not most of the money is being spent in the USA. In Iraq and Afghanistan a sizable proportion was spent overseas.
