Photos of the wreckage of the Russian S-70 Okhotnik-B (Hunter-B) flying wing unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) that was shot down by a Russian fighter in a mysterious incident over Ukraine last weekend reveal that it was carrying at least one precision-guided glide bomb. This would appear to confirm that the drone was engaged in some kind of operational trials, including prosecuting Ukrainian targets, perhaps also specifically to establish how the S-70 performs in a contested environment.

Among the twisted and burnt remains of the drone, the nose cone from at least one example of the UMPB D-30SN winged precision-guided bomb can be clearly made out. This is a weapon we have examined in depth in the past, but it wasn't previously known to be part of the S-70's armory. The weapon is a much more refined glide bomb compared to the previous UMPK, a fairly crude type of weapon that nonetheless has caused considerable difficulties for Ukrainian air defenses since its introduction in around early 2023.

KYIV, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Russian forces have entered the outskirts of the eastern Ukraine frontline city of Toretsk, Ukraine's military said late on Monday, less than a week after the fall of the bastion town of Vuhledar.

"The situation is unstable, fighting is taking place literally at every entrance (to the city)," Anastasiia Bobovnikova, spokesperson of the Operational Tactical Group "Luhansk" told Ukraine's national broadcaster. "The Russians have entered the eastern outskirts of the city."

There was no immediate comment from the Russian defence ministry, which said earlier on Monday that its forces inflicted damage to manpower and equipment near several settlements in the area, including near Toretsk.

Russian military bloggers, including a group of military analysts who ran the prominent Rybar Telegram channel, said Russian troops continue to advance towards the centre of the town.

Classic journalism.

We start with:
"But there aren't many of these tanks left."

Then we get:
"The brigade took with it the survivors of 31 American-made M-1 Abrams tanks"

Next:
"At most, the 47th Mechanized Brigade has 25 M-1s left. At a minimum, it might have just 17."

Finally:
"those 14 to 25 survivors of the original 31 Ukrainian M-1s will have to soldier on alone."

Thank God the article was not any longer, or else Ukraine would not have any M1s left...

Well, considering the undisputed fact that Russia has knocked out over a hundred M1s since the start of the Special Military Operation, it's a wonder there are any left.

It reminds me a little towards the end of the BOB. The Germans kept being told that the RAF only had a little over 50 fighters left in the reserve. When the Biggin Hill Big Wing finally sorted themselves out and made a co-ordinated attack. One of the German pilots was said to have called sarcastically, over the radio that here come all the RAF reserves, all in the same place.
