It amazes me that 1,100+ days into the war, Russian forces are still failing to heed lessons learned in the first few months of the conflict.

To revive a quote from a Ukrainian solider in 2022: We are very lucky that they are so %^&@#%$ stupid

It feels like they're set up not to learn. the high casualty rates means people may not be building experience in the first place, they're seems to be no incentive for officers to do things differently, they don't care what casualties they take, there seems to be very little trust between units, or even within units, it's every man for himself. Nothing about that encourages learning or passing on lessons learned the hard way.

To fight a war like this one from the Russian side, it requires either a very well trained army that is there because they are willing to be, with that willingness based on positive motivation - or an ignorant army, there because they do not understand what is happening.

The propaganda machine in Russia has done its job quite well for a significant part of the population, which is where most of the recruits/conscripts are coming from. The rest of the population have twigged to what is going on and many are attempting to avoid conscription. But for most, regardless of which group they are in:

Here dead lie we because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose;
But young men think it is, and we were young.

When the radio waves are spammed with the blabbering of amateurs in suits...
It's refreshing to hear the soldiers talking. And the ex-soldiers as that senator who mentioned her service in Iraq on one base with a Ukrainian unit.
Interesting conversations.
Good assessment by Gen.Cavoli, sober, no panicking. He said a few words about F-16s.

By the way, the roles of Gen.Cavoli and Gen.Donahue in this war were highlighted in the recent NYT article.
Real men with real jobs in their hands.
