Our American administration is still ignoring several lessons from Munich.

1) Giving someone a bite of the apple they covet is essentially giving them the apple.

2) Kowtowing to bullies doesn't lessen their appetite.

3) Working together is more difficult to attain, but also more difficult to defeat.
As long as Ukraine is willing to fight on, the only US position should be to give Ukraine the tools necessary to bleed Russia dry, all while economically and diplomatically isolating Russia. With the right backing, Ukraine could carry on fighting for another decade, likely replacing men with increasingly deadly and effective drones. And there's no downside for the US, as it gets to remove a former world power from the stage, can sell US energy to Russia's former customers, and remind Beijing to watch their step.

You're quite right. Everything involved in this decision is better for America if we support Ukraine. Morally, militarily, economically, and diplomatically, Russia's defeat here would benefit American foreign policy.

Were worse come to worst and Ukraine concedes the battlefield, I'd still support aiding hypothetical Ukrainian insurgents. I believe in supporting freedom and don't mind my taxes being spent to make the world a better place ... ideally. Knuckling under only gets you under the knuckles.

I could not decide whether this belonged in this thread or Quotes and Jokes but I think it truly applies here to Zelensky and all his people. I suppose it also applies to the poor darned Russians sent to the front line but will never apply to Putin and his puppets.

I believe that Ukrainian anti-Stalinist forces fought until at least 1949 against the Red Army. I can't imagine the Ukrainians now doing any less .... Russia will continue to bleed regardless of any worthless 'treaties' signed EDIT: by Russia and the US

And, it was the 1st Ukrainian Guards that fought into the center of Berlin, suffering some of the most savage combat.

Zelensky has made it absolutely clear that Ukraine will not ceede one inch of sovereign soil.

So let the tool make the deals, but Ukraine will have the last word.

As a side note:
Putler is still a wanted war criminal - the U.S. is obligated by international treaty to honor that.
It would be amazing if the Alaskan National Guard crashed the party and captured that asshole.

The US has refused to ratify or support (for the most part) the Rome Statute, which is the UN agreement that establishes the ICC (International Criminal Court) as an international authority. Hence, in the eyes of the US government, the US ia not required to arrest or turn over Putin.

The US did this due to a reluctance to give authority and credence to the international body's concerns regarding US behavior overseas during the past 80 years or so, in particular the US actions relative to attempting to topple various foreign governments (Vietnam, Libya, and Venezuela for examples) and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as specific behaviors that are considered war crimes.

There is no statute of limitations on the 4 core laws for which the ICC was created, and if the US ratified the Rome Statute and ceded authority in the matters of the ICC, they would have to turn over various former leaders and other higher-up officials for trial.

The US could do so if they chose to, relative to either their own criminals or Putin, but are not required to by internal law.

from Wiki: The Rome Statute established four core international crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. Those crimes "shall not be subject to any statute of limitations". Under the Rome Statute, the ICC can only investigate and prosecute the four core international crimes in situations where states are "unable" or "unwilling" to do so themselves. On a slightly different heading. I am sure that we are all aware of the combat films of drones hunting down individual soldiers who frankly have little chance of getting away with it. There are a number of examples where the target was able to get a shot off at the drone but wasn't able to hit it.
Does anyone think that there is a role for the late lamented sub machine gun. A lot of the fighting is at short range, in tree lines and trenches where the sub machine gun can more than hold its own. With the automatic rate of fire they have a much better chance of hitting the drone. Its just an idea worth floating
