Hey, GTX, I thought you might come back and finish your thought here. Am I being dumb and missing the obvious, or is there something unsaid that might help me understand better?

I agree with your predication, but want to know what follows the "if", unless I'm being really dense.
Doh!!! old:oops:

Got distracted...

Let's try that again:

Yeah, I was mainly focussing on the AH-1Z. Now, I believe helicopters, be they attack or transport, still have a role but in this particular war I think the drone situation and the air defence environment, has changed things significantly and thus the investment may be better placed elsewhere. Now, if used to help give additional mobility to the Ukrainians behind the front lines (in the case of transport helicopters) then there is a case. WRT the AH-1s, there is also a role to help offload the Hinds however, I feel this war has already shown that air operations in an environment with the air defences such as they are is suicidal. And when it comes to things such as MANPADS one can't really even use SEAD tactics (other than drones/artillery I suppose). Now ifs the Ukrainians can go over to the offence and get a breakthrough, using the helicopters as the air component of a combined arms breakthrough/penetration could be useful. I also suppose one could conceivably use them in an deep strike role flying in behind the Russians but again, this releases on getting past the front line air defences first and indeed the air defences behind the front. If sone well such a deep strike could be impressive but I fear it would be a suicide mission for those involved and one the Ukrainians would be unwilling to use scarce resources on, especially new platforms. Much better to use drones...
