It seemed that this might have affected Johnson's distrust of the JCS: I think he thought LeMay would use any excuse he could to "get WWIII started". While I don't know about what Generals replaced him, I'm curious if Johnson thought they or the JCS might have the same mindset.

I honestly don't know. The Wiki on him describes someone who we airmen would think of as "ate up", but how he compared to his predecessors, beats me.

I don't know the background behind the phrase. I always assumed it was along the lines of "eaten up with enthusiasm".
