why would you assume it's a "D" when it has the visual aspects of an "F"?

Because both WarbirdTech series no.17 by F.A.Johnsen and Crowood Aviation series for Bell P-39 Airacobra by R.F.Dorr and J.C.Scutts say the same? Also because these twelve stacks aren't the proof of the Airacobra variant... OK.. Is that the D or F variant below? Judging by the serial it could be the D version.
