US Navy Blue Angels Prepare to Soar Again

For Lt. Commander Dave Tickle and the other five demo pilots, performing plunging dives and barrel rolls in an F/A-18 fighter jet with hairpin precision above a cheering crowd is all in a day's work.

They are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, an elite aviation team that performs daredevil stunts with wing tips as close as 18 inches apart, as spectators watch below.

The Blue Angels have been out of action for a year due to budget cuts, but are making a comeback this year. The team's 2014 debut is today at Naval Air Facility (NAF) in El Centro, Calif., where a crowd of between 35,000 and 50,000 people are expected.

Ahead of their first show, "Nightline" was granted rare access to fly with the demonstration pilots during their final days of winter training.

The Blue Angels train together six days a week, two or three times a day, both in the gym and in the air -- for years -- each time pushing the envelope as they screech through the air in jets that costs $30 million each.

"We take our physical conditioning very seriously," Lt. Commander Tickle said. "Working out six days a week is no joke."

These men are picked for their skill and calm-under-pressure attitudes. Every Blue Angel pilot is selected by U.S. Navy operational fleet forces and all come from operational squadrons.

Lt. Commander Tickle was chosen from dozens of pilots to be a Blue Angel demo-pilot. Married with one child and another one on the way, Tickle is now in his fourth season with the team. He has a total flight time of over 2,000 flight hours.

"We do it so much that we're not nervous about it," Lt. Commander Tickle said. "Day after day, exact same things, so we're very comfortable doing it knowing that we always have that margin of safety."

His fellow pilots include No. 2 Right Wing Pilot, Lt. Commander John Hiltz, 34, now in his third year as a Blue Angel, and No. 3 Left Wing Pilot, Lt. Commander Nate Barton, who has a wife and three kids. Others include Captain Brandon Cordill and Lt. Mark Tedrow. Navy Commander Thomas Frosch, as known as "Boss," leads the team.

"It's all about inspiring kids," Frosch said. "I was inspired as a 6-year-old. ... It made me say, 'I don't understand the military as a 6-year-old but I want to do that,' and our goal is to inspire a culture of excellence and service to the country."

The team's key to perfection is practice. Each flier is required to put on 120 practice demos before they are ready to do a full show. The squadron trains in the desert to sift out any potential errors that could occur and every flight is crucial. A doctor is on base when the Blue Angels are training and said he watches to see if the nose of a plane starts to dip, which could indicate that the pilot is losing or has lost consciousness.

"They're flying sometimes only at 50 feet and so going unconscious just for a millisecond or a second can be detrimental or catastrophic," said Lt. Commander Mark DeBuse, the flight surgeon for the Blue Angels.

The aircraft are capable of soaring up to 30,000 feet in less than a minute, flying at speeds of over 800 miles per hour in just 30 seconds. The risks are incredibly high. Twenty six pilots have died since the Blue Angels were formed almost 70 years ago, giving this job a 10 percent fatality rate.

Safety is the first concern of any aviation team. By definition, high-performance jets are demanding and unforgiving. Many of the accidents are caused by the pilot's sudden loss of vision or consciousness. This happens because of G-forces on the body when they perform steep, fast turns.

"Unfortunately there have been guys in the past who have passed out," Lt. Commander Barton said. "It's fatal if it happens to you. You can't recover. You are so close to the ground so that's obviously why we take it as seriously as we do."

Lt. Commander Barton is the newest Blue Angels formation pilot. Core strength training is one of the main ways to avoid accidents that can happen in the air, he said.

"We've all had times where we've let that vision curtain close a little further than we'd like to," he said. "You'll start to see your vision start to go away and you need to have the core strength to be able to squeeze that blood back into your head, kind of like a toothpaste tube."

The pressure is on for this season's pilots after their season was canceled last year due to budget cuts. Some may see the Blue Angels performances as gaudy, an unnecessary show of American military might and a waste of money, but maybe those critics haven't see the Blue Angels soar.

"You won't find six other guys that are more excited about flying this year than we are," Lt. Commander Hiltz said. "You know it is really important for us to get back there to connect with the American public."
 
Great to hear they are back in action. They always put on a good show.

I think I liked them best when they were flying the A-4 Skyhawk. It made a very good demo plane.

The Hornets are OK, but leave me wanting a better demo plane ... and the A-4 was LOT cheaper to operate, too.
 
This is great news. Just talked to the missus, looks like we'll be taking in their Milwaukee show in June. Can't wait!

I've been to 4 of their shows before. (Along with two by the Thunderbirds.) The last two as (bad) luck would have it, were the "flat" shows due to low ceilings. Still impressive, but not as spectacular as the full show.

Greg, while I agree with you about the Skyscooter being a great show performer, the age of the planes were catching up with them and maintenance was starting to become problematic. In fact, at the last Blue Angels show I attended that featured the A4, (Mankato Minnesota) they finished the last third of the show with #3 missing, being replaced with the 2 seater. After the show ended, we hung around talking with relatives. That's when we saw #3 on a very long shallow and slow final approach. It landed and taxied toward the rest of the planes and rolled to a stop without bothering to line up with the others, as is their usual custom. In a few minutes, we saw why, as what appeared to be hydraulic fluid starting pooling on the tarmac below the aircraft. They made the switch to the F-18s the following year.

Yeah, I fully realize the reasons the A-4's were phased out.

Most people are not aware that the Blue Angles and Thunderbirds don't get new birds, they get old birds that have issues, because the service can spare those birds since they are a bit "tired" anyway. But that is what they get.

It says a lot about our aero industry that I can't think of a good contemporary mount made in the USA ... maybe the Cessna Scorpion.

Ah well, it'll be good to see them flying again.
 
So glad they are back in the air, they are ambassadors for our brave service folk and the country. It Pi**es me off that they are even considered for budget cuts when the guys that do the cutting for the sake of a few coppers in the scheme of things, never look at their own inflated expenditure and privileges.

In the words of Old Bill and me mate Paul………………..Just sayin.
 
It's pretty universal that the guys who make up a layoff list very rarely put their own names on it.

Likewise when it comes to privileges, people rarely think their own lifestyle needs to be amended, like you said above.

Think about how many people travel when the President travels and it brings to mind the words "ridiculously excessive." It is difficult for me to fathom why the office of the President needs that many people just to take a trip.
 
A few years ago the BBC showed two programs one on the Blue Angels and one on the Red Arrows. I am sure we all agree that these are two teams of the highest order but was interesting was how different they were in the way they train, interact with each other and the general organisation behind them.
What was common was the age of the aircraft, the F18's are at the end of their lifecycle and normally get scrapped after their time with the display team. The Hawks in the Red Arrows were probably the oldest Hawks in the RAF, with old fashioned instruments the lot.
 
Let's all hope not.

Unless some basic faults have been fixed that would be a mistake. Perhaps if the F-35 is actually successful, when they get some "tired" planes, maybe then. Since the brain palace is contemplating a 50 year service life (never said the brains were smart ...), maybe we could see the Blues in F-35's in 2045 or so ...
