The largest producer of Mozerella cheese in the US is closing its biggest plant in CA and relocating to a new $1B plant in Lubbock, TX. Employment at the new plant will be around 600 people as opposed to the less than 400 people in CA, so it is not part of an overall downsizing.
Meta is relocating its HQ to Miami, FL.
When I got to CA in 1978 the biggest problem the various leaders were worried about was how to deal with the fact the place was so popular that they could not handle the influx of new people arriving. People were arguing that it was unfair to be forced to move from their apartments in the Manhatten Beach/Redondo Beach/Torrance area just because rents were increasing to more than they could afford. Companies were having trouble finding new hires because the costs of housing were so high. The folks at MDAC in Huntington Beach would invite new people from the Midwest and East to apply. But after being flown out to LA, given a tour of the factory, and a nice dinner, they did not even show up for the job interview the next day. Turns out they would go back to the hotel, buy a newspaper and look at the listing of places for rent and sale - then decide it was pointless to interview, since they could not afford to live there. Some companies already were relocating out of the LA area to other CA locations, just to be able to hire new people.
Now, 40 years later, the "CA leaders" seem to be like aging movie stars, dreaming of the days when they were successful, and still thinking that they could do no wrong, that it's impossible to make CA undesirable no matter how hard they try to screw it up.
The 5% Total Wealth Tax being pushed by some labor unions is having a huge impact, even though it has not even been voted on yet. One reporter said, "Well, say I had a million dollars. Would a tax that reduced that to $900,000 change my lifestyle and make me move out of the state? No!"
A tax that took 5% or 10% of my total worth would indeed make me change my lifestyle. Step One would be buying more guns. Step Two would be severely thinning out the herd of people trying to rob me. So moving is indeed the better option.
