Can anyone help me identifying this B-24 from the 93rd Operations Group? (Markings on Rudder: B- 273507-D)

Hiya everyone,

I'm once again asking for some help with the identfication of a shot down B-24 bomber. I'm no expert at this, but if I understand it correctly, the white B in the circle means it belongs to the 93rd Operations Group of the 8th Air Force, but I couldnt really find anything for the serial number "273507".

This bomber was shown in a German Propaganda Newsreel from March 8th, 1944, and was- according to the narrator- shot down during the "Big Week" (Operation Argument).

If anyone knows anything more about this particular bomber, I'd be very grateful.

It is the B-24J-50-CO Liberator named "Sunday Girl", serial number 42-73507 ,the code letters "GO-D", the RCL code letter "D" of the 93rd Bomb Group 328 Bomb Squadron of the 8thAF.

On 30 January 1944 the target was Brunswick, Germany. This B-24 developed engine trouble in route to the target and turned back. On the way back they dropped their bomb load on another target and came under attack from a Flak Unit knocking out a second engine. The B-24 had to make a crash landing with all crew members aboard near Nijkerk (Gelderland), Holland. All ten men of the crew survived.

Thats rather interesting, as the Newsweek implies it was lost during the Big Week, when it was in fact already lost almost a month earlier.

PS. The "Black B" (not the white) in the white disk is the marking of the 8thAF, 20th BW, 93rd BG.

The 93rd Operations Group did not exist in WW II. The 93rd BG was inactivated postwar but the number was assigned to a new unit from 1991 to 2002.
Easily checked online, especially wikipedia.

Consolidated B-24J-50-CO Liberator - 42-73507 (93rd BG, 328th BS) lost IJsselmeer, Netherlands Jan 30, 1944. Force landed 25 mi N of Amsterdam. MACR 2341. 4 POW, 6 evaded. I have a reference saying that this aircraft fell into Luftwaffe hands.

The Wikipedia page makes it looks like it did exist during WWII on first glance, only in the article itself its written that it was called 93d Bombardment Group during the war, thats probably why I got it wrong, my apologies.
