Chrysler Said It Couldn't Be Done Until A Chicago Dealer Built 640 Of Them

Chrysler Australia made the Valiant series. The best known is the Charger, built on the US Chrysler A-body platform (Plymouth Valiant, Dodge Dart etc)
but widened.
Very popular and still sells well to collectors. Pics are of the R/T model (early 1970's). Produced in 6 and 8 cylinder models.
The straight six 265 was the most popular. Scroll down to the last pic for this engine and why.

Ok. Below is the E49 engine. A straight six 265 ci. 302 horsepower due to hemi, different cam,
triple dual barrel carbs, and sports exhaust. These were faster from 0 to 60 than Ford or Holden (GM)
V8 offerings as well as easily beating them over 1/4 mile.

They had success in touring car racing and handled way better than the V8 models. At one stage 80%
of Valiant sales were Chargers.
This engine made the Charger the fastest six cylinder vehicle in the world for a while, only being eclipsed
by the flat six Porsche.

The Pacer sedan kept the speed mantle as the fastest four door six until 1988.

Those are actually Funk heads, the company was known for Flat head V8 conversions of Ford tractors. There is actually one for sale on Bring a Trailer at the moment

My thought was prompted by a 1950s friend who had a 39 Ford (they could be bought for $25 in those days) equipted with Edmunds heads & intake Manifold (with two Stromburg 97s) & a cam from a company I can' t remember. Great times were had in 1955-56 when the rich boys showed up with their new 1955-56 Chevys. they thought noway could that old flathead beat the fastest stock 283 (that's what the salesman told them). My friend won enough for free gas and beverages until 1957 when Chevy put in the 327. In 1959 when I left for the Air Force, he had put the flathead in an MGA to make a few bucks but it twisted rear axles cutting the profit.
