Cars that I'd..... (3 Viewers)

I put an Edmunds aluminum head and aluminum manifold with two Stromberg 97 two barrel carbs on my 1948 Plymouth flathead six. An Isky cam went in also.

I have loved the looks of Jags. A quick story: Those familiar with the New Orleans area know of Lake Ponchartrain and the 24 mile bridge crossing it. As originally built, it was only two lanes wide, two way traffic with a one dollar toll. Due to the dollar cost, usually not often used on Sundays, except for sight seeing. My friend's Dad had just bought his first NEW car, a 1988 Oldsmobile Rocket four door hard top convertible with the big engine. After a careful breakin period, he took the family on a Sunday ride and to the Lake bridge to see how fast it could go. After just a few miles nearing 100 MPH, an older Jaguar Saloon flew past him and disappeared ahead. My friend's Dad slowed down and said, "That's just too fast to drive."

I am assuming the 1988 is a Typo and you meant 1958 or 68? And I can attest to the Mark II's top end speed, my wifes 1961 Mark II 3.8 can easily reach 120 MPH even though it is an automatic without over drive, and can easilly cruise at 100 MPH.

I don't think he had reached Max speed, but continued at a sane speed as a face saving motive. My friend's Dad bought himself a second retirement car, trading the very well kept 88 for a new 1991 Pontiac convertible (actual convertible), white interior, black top, metallic red exterior and the 421 cu in engine. I was never allowed to ride in it and his kids had to have clean clothes and shoes before entering.
Another item about the 88 Olds: No one in the family was allowed to drive it, so when Mrs needed groceries, Mr drove her and sat in the car waiting (protecting). When he could see her inside at the checkout, he would drive up to loading area. A woman backed out of her spot a distance away, continued backing down the isle towards the store. When it became obvious she was not goin to stop, my friend's sounded the horn, but she backed into him nailing both passenger side doors, front and rear. I heard the mild mannered Dad began to rave about the accident, but when she said, "I don't know why you are so upset. It's only a dent." I was told he went insane.

In the 70's a friend bought a british racing green jag which is about the same model as the third of your pics. Same wheels, sunroof, even
had an altimeter in case it took off. Cost - $100. Problem. It didn't go. Someone had wrecked the timing setup and no one local wanted to know.

He was going to swap the engine to a different make but it didn't end up happening and sat in a paddock for the next thirty years.
