Pembridge Castle, originally called Newland Castle, is a late 12th century to early 13th century Grade I listed former border castle located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of Welsh Newton in Herefordshire, England.

It was most likely constructed by Matilda de St Valery sometime before 1208. It is over 40 km (25 mi) away from the actual village of Pembridge. Founded by 1208, it was the seat of the Pembridge family, then later the Wakes and Mortimer families in the 14th and 15th centuries. The chapel is 16th century and was ruined in 1644 during the English Civil War. Much reconstruction of the castle was undertaken in the early 20th century....

Our home, Château de Laleuf. in Saint-Maur, Indfre, near Chateauroux, an 18th-century estate, dated 1761. The Laleuf estate belonged to General Henri-Gatien Bertrand, a loyal companion and general of Napolean, accompanying him into exile.
Dad rented the Chateau, our four boy family had the large main floor, and rented second floor to two sergeants with smaller families. Working farm next door was part of our playground and education from '52-55.

Very nice mate!
We were lucky, lucky, lucky, and made a solid contribution to the French postwar recovery by living in the community instead of isolated on the Base enclave and island. We hired a live in couple who made us feel like landed gentry, and their knowledge and marketing saved us far more than their modest wages.

I thank my organized and adventuresome parents for their imagination, and they made sure we took full advantage of the opportunity and made sure that we realized it.

Dad was offered and urged to purchase just the Chateau and immediate grounds at a reasonable price, but the upkeep and potential would have been ruinous on a major's income and future.
