Castel Beseno (sometimes referred to as Schloss Pysein in German-language texts) is the largest fortified structure in Trentino-Alto Adige. Located in the territory of the municipality of Besenello, in the province of Trento, it is currently one of the seats of the museum complex of the Provincial Museum of the Castello del Buonconsiglio.
 
A question for those who have knowledge of European building construction. I have wondered about the roof shingles seen in many views of Then & Now, both UK and continental, which are installed at a diagonal with respect to the ridge line of the roof, as seen in the castle above. What is the advantage?
 
S special ed ... the diagonal pattern at the roof is a visual trick because of the way of the tiling but not the diagonal installation . The flat slates are layered with the pattern that is called the fish-skin. The kind of the shingle has to be tiling as the double layer each attached to a separate batten running parallelly to the ridge. So it doesn't run diagonally. Each line of the roof tiles is moved about a half of the slate width in proportion to the shingle line put up.Thanks to that the side fitting edge between two tiles is covered both from the top and bottom making the joining more leaktight. Also the fish-skin pattern is useful for tilling of the dome roofs like for the towers in the pic above. According to my friend who is a construction engineer the kind of layering makes tiling easier for the complex in shape roofs and these with the circular or oval windows there.
