Delta will destroy Pan Am Worldport!

I know this may not be news to many people, but Delta is really going to tear down the historic Pan Am Worldport. if we don't do something soon, a wonderful piece of aviation and architectural history will be lost forever. do what you can. send emails to Delta, share this story, post on their Facebook wall. ANYTHING to help preserve this building!

Flew in and out of there many times when my dad worked for PanAm in Hangar 14....sad fate..

It is a wasteful shame to wreck this iconic building.
PANAM were the world shrinker's of the modern age and deserve better than this.

PanAm did quite a bit to shrink the world and make it affordable in the process. Thier influence was far reaching enough that thier pan-pacific stations became bases in the Pacific during WWII (midway, Wake, etc) and even some of thier employees fought and were captured/killed alongside Allied troops in the early days of the war...

at least the terminal in La Guardia is still standing. that should be turned into a Pan Am museum.

Just thought we would pass on this bit of information we received from one of our members who has been in contact with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.)

He said:

"The reason why the edge of the roof is being removed is because it contains a hazardous non-friable (rigid) flashing material to be wrapped for disposal. This is part of the asbestos abatement according to the EPA and Gramercy Demolition. The roof piping also contains asbestos insulation that is being wrapped and removed.

The building roof will remain intact as will all other Worldport enclosing structures, since they cannot have any openings or leaks until the interior asbestos removal is complete.

The EPA will be out there tomorrow to assess the supposed compromised front column and pier damaged during the front roadway demolition.

The EPA asbestos spokesman said his sister was at the Pan Am Terminal in 1964 to greet the Beatles during Beatlemania. "

It is what it is, but since it seems this kind of abatement would need to be done anyway and the majority of the building will remain standing a bit longer, I suggest if there is still support out there, to continue hitting Delta and the Port Authority with emails, tweets and Facebook page comments.
