This might be a little bit off topic, but the description of this is which I am going to explain some questions about this lost aircraft in the following links from Pacific Wrecks.
link 1: Pacific Wrecks - C-47-DL "Johnny Reb" Serial Number 41-18571 Call Sign VH-CCN
link 2: Pacific Wrecks - C-47 Skytrain 41-????? Popondetta
Sources are from Pacific Wrecks.
This Douglas C-47 was built from the Douglas Aircraft Company Factory in Long Beach, New York. The constructor's number was number 4696. The description states on October 7, 1942, the C-47 was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces. As the C-47 Skytrain, serial number 41-18571 ferried overseas to South of the West Pacific Area.
The mission of this aircraft:
In 1942 on December 3, the plane took off from "Five Mile Drome" near Port Moresby, Papa New Guinea. Due to "Pilot Error" the plane crashed and burned without any casualties at Popondetta Airfield in Papa New Guinea.
Question 1. How do we know if it was pilot error?
Question 2. How many Casualties did the crew have?
Question 3. What made the aircraft crash? Who knows if it was pilot error or not, it might have been a faulty system in the aircraft that made the aircraft plunge towards the ground?
The description of the first link states that it was likely scrapped or "otherwise disappeared."
But a link in the first link goes to another description that shows the photos of another aircraft (C-47 41-?????) OR it may be Johnny Reb, 41-18571...
The other link from the first link in the following states, "Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Constructors number unknown (four digits). Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) as C-47 Skytrain serial number 41-????? (last five digits is unknown). Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia.
In this description there is the image of two 2/4 Ambulance personnel on the right wing of 41-????? or it was either C-47 "Johnny Reb" serial number 41-18571 in this picture.
The following description states, "This photograph was likely taken either December 12, 1942 or December 28, 1942 when Watson is known to have taken a photographs at this location."
The wartime history of this aircraft is that it crashed or it was destroyed while out was parked at Popendetta Airfield sometime before December (unknown date) 1942 and then afterwards it was written off or stripped for usable parts with the engines removed.
Question 4. How did 41-????? or "Johnny Reb" serial 41-18571 was destroyed while it was parked?
Question 5. What dates did the parking crash happen?
A picture of the Aircraft either 41-????? or C-47 "Johnny Reb" serial 41-18571 while it lays on on Popondetta Airfield that is viewed from the southward portion of the airfield.
In Conclusion, was it 41-????? or C-47 "Johnny Reb"?
