That's the day they announced the creation of the US Air Force Academy.Of all the days, in all the weeks and months of a year they choose April 1st as decision day?
Its also the day my parents got married. Nothing should happen on 1st of April, it dooms all projects. That's the day they announced the creation of the US Air Force Academy.
And the Royal Air Force! That's the day they announced the creation of the US Air Force Academy.
Where is public opinion in Germany on this idea?
Years ago Martin van Creveld (Israeli military historian) wasn't particularly impressed with Bundeswehr training and ethos. Today he is probably even less impressed. Based on encounters with some German youth, my expectations aren't great.Probably not very high or good. It already was not very high when I was of conscription age (I still remember getting my letter when I was 17 turning 18), and the modern generation is definitely not in favor.

But how well can they fight in real war when every soldier has been told that they are basically allowed to disobey every order they don't like? It is interesting to note that in an interview in the 1950s a certain Eisenhower stated that one thing he doesn't tolerate is disobedience. The training and deployments I did with The Bundeswehr in the early 2000s was excellent. The soldiers I worked with were very well trained.
I imagine with the current youth generation it has declined dramatically.
Well.. US soldiers sure can disobey orders. But how well can they fight in real war when every soldier has been told that they are basically allowed to disobey every order they don't like? We had a positive duty to not obey illegal orders. Of course, you'd damned well better be right.
Exactly. The topic was (and still is) one of the first things new soldiers are introduced to. It protects both them and the military.
And not only that, just plain absolute stupid stuff you can get away with disobeying if everyone knows it is stupid. We had a positive duty to not obey illegal orders. Of course, you'd damned well better be right.
