Veery interesting! Although the rear of photo says 1941, the insignia agrees with 1943, however the question is, how did a B-17D land in Rome? Could this be one of the B-17Ds mentioned in relation to HALPRO in another thread?

I never knew American flagged B-17C?Ds made it to the MTO(?). A squadron hack?
I have an old book somewhere in the basement ('Famous Bombers of WW2', or something similar). In the chapter on the B-17, I distinctly remember reading that 4 of the RAF Fortress I's were sent to the Med, where I was returned to the USAAF. I wonder if this is that aircraft?

Here is a picture of a better quality. It's the B-17D 42-3092 5th BG - 23rd BS - 5th AF. Assigned 23BS/5BG Hickam Filed, HI 14-May-41; (aircraft No.41) Returned to the USA Long Beach 22-Oct-42; Love Field 23-Nov-42; Smyrna 2-Jan-43; Lockbourn 23-Jan-43; crashed Newark Army Air Field, NJ with Dan Kingman 15-Jul-43; Salvaged. Ended as trainer for Aviation Engineering Cadet Detachment at Yale Univ. 1944-45. Never served in the UK. And it seems she never left the USA.

Interesting ... so the paint scheme is from the Hawaiian Air Depot?

I would say yes .. it looks like the Hawaiian Air Depot colors. According to the Roger Freeman's " The B-17 Flying Fortress story ", the B-17D 40-3092 was assigned to the 5th Bomb Group in Hawaii at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She survived and participated in many patrols over the ocean. Having a close up look at the pic it may be noticed the old US insignia were overpainted and the new ones with the bars applied at the new location. The old book Camouflage & Markings 13, BOEING B-17 FLYING FORTRESS 1937-1945 also has the picture and the info it was taken in 1944. The next net source says it was taken at Yale University.
