Regarding message 441. Shipping Malta

There were 18 Hurricanes fitted with long range tanks and set to Malta/Middle East by air in June 1940, not all made it. Lost in France P2584 and P2644 at Marignane, P2626 at Ussel.

Other notes, part of a batch built at Brooklands meant for Iran, fitted with De Havilland 2 pitch propeller. The July 1940 accident was due to thinking the new portion of the airfield recently under plough was a landing area. The ground was not marked as that would destroy the airfield camouflage.

Interesting, I'll have to look into it further. I knew they had schemes in the works to send Hurricanes to Norway -- but nothing I have indicates anything was in place until the Mk.II.

Very unlikely that this is in France in 1940 : the Hurricane has a Vokes tropical filter. The cold-weather gear on the German soldiers would point to a wreck of the early 1941 campaign in the Balkans or Greece... photo taken perhaps later that year. Just a guess !

This is one of the wrecks that were abandoned in the last days of fighting in Greece in April 1941. B. Wundshammer was an official German photogrpher that documented the fall of Greece. See this Thread :

I have this one. A great reference. I also have the Osprey Hurricane Aces, which has a chapter on Greece, with Pat Pattle, William Vale, and Roald Dahl (barely making it as an 'ace'). Any unusual pictures of 33 Sqn, 80 Sqn and 112 Sqn aircraft in Greece, even wrecks. Stuff from eBay, maybe...

IMHO you are right. It is the same Hurricane seen in the image you posted some time ago.

I have found this picture that could be in Greece : it's a RAF MkI Hurricane with Vokes filter but the airfield seems temperate (so not Egypt, etc.) and it has its ferry tanks, which Hurricanes use to have on their way across the Mediterranean, so that chances are good that it's on a British...
