UK 1942, Vought Vindicator and Devastators taken in April 1942 when US Navy contingent was based at RNAS Hatston a.k.a. HMS Sparrowhawk, Orkney. Fascinating photos of early USN presence in wartime Britain.

We know that one of these aircraft force landed close to Skudeneshavn, Norway, 14. April 1942. The pilot was John E. Dunn. One eye witness said that he could see the Stars on the plane. Some say that it should have been painted in the Royal Navy colour scheme, and not operating in US colours when operating in the North Sea area. The pilots plan was to be heading for the Orkney Island, however he ended up in the opposite direction, and also to become the first American prisoner of WW2.
