A Firefly is a Sherman tank fitted with the British 17 pounder (77mm) Anti-tank gun which was near in capability to the 88mm fitted to the Tiger. This made it much more effective in tank on tank engangements (although it still had weak armour).

Didn't the Israelis upgun the Sherman to either a 90MM or 105MM gun? Supersherman, as I recall.

Yep, the M-51, looks really unstable when you see pictures of it.

Does anybody know if it worked well as a tank or was it more of a support weapon?

"super shermans" had a French 105mm gun, and I believe they saw service in 56, 67, and 73 wars.

That's a honkin' big gun on a tall tank. Must've been some pretty decent engineering involved to allow it to fire without falling over.

Perhaps we could have a thread, where pictures get posted of all the different Sherman Varients known around the world?
