Green camo color for the P-40 Flying Tiger.

I'm working on a 1:72 scale Academy P-40 Flying Tiger. The academy kit has no real paint recomendations so I searched online for model master colors. Is medium green the right color for camo over the sand base color?
 
These real paints for P-40 of the Flying Tigers were colours of DuPont firm.... Curtiss Green 71-013 ( FS 34079 to FS 34092 ) , Dark Brown 71-009/71-065 ( FS 30219 to FS 30118 ) on top and sides. The Curtiss Gray 71-021 ( FS 36463 or FS 36622 that matches better to pictures ) on undersides.

The green colour ( mix of FS34092 and FS34079 in 2:1 ratio ) - ModelMaster 1764 and ModelMaster 1710 in 2:1 ratio in order to reduce its olive hue.
For ModelMaster acrylic 4729 and 4726.

The brown colour ( FS30219) - ModelMaster 1742 or 1735.

The grey colour ( FS36622 ) - ModelMaster 1733 or 1730 or 1729.

If you want to match the colour as close as possible you have to. Which Academy kit do you have?
 
No problem . But the kit is a plastic scrap . I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. The Trumpeter one looks much better.

 
Oh... it is not too necessary. Just the model is the worst P-40 replic I have ever seen. I started it a few years ago and gave it up finally. Now she is waiting for being converted into the H-75.

I see. These mentioned above paints would be correct for the standard camouflage of the early USAAF planes and a little bit late ones as well. But these early P-40s of the AVG were fighter machines for the RAF initially. So their camo scheme had to be the same like the one used in the Europe with the RAF planes. Because the Curtiss factory didn't have these origin RAF paints , they had to use similar ones that matched in tonality as close as possible. As a result the Dupont paints were used that were a little bit different in tonalities from the RAF colours.


The main problem with paints of different manufacturers is that their names might be a little bit different. Here you are a link to a site with a list of Model Master/Testors colours with their numbers and names... Model Master color chart - Model paint database

According to that you need... for the mixed green colour the MM1764 - Europan Green and the MM1710 - Dark Green. For the brown ( but not sand ) colour the MM1742 - Dark Tan or the MM1735 - Wood. The grey colour on undersides should be the MM1733 - Camouflage Grey or the MM1730 - Flatt Gull Grey or the MM1729 - Gloss Gull Grey.

As far as these wheel bays are concerned .... you need the MM1734 Green Zinc Chromate with one or two drops of yellow paint.

In fact the sand paint is a kind of a "dirty" yellow one and I wouldn't follow this one because the colour was used for a desert camo scheme. You need a paint called red-brown or rust-brown as the base. Generally you need the ModelMaster 1742 paint called Dark Tan. Its sample below. If you don't have the colour or have a problem with purchasing , you can mix some of a red paint with a drop ( maybe two ) of a black one in order to obtain the brown colour. Then add some of a white. Also one drop of yellow might be needed too.
