Quite by accident recently I came accross a picture of a Lancaster bomber and it started me thinking about the war years when I was a small boy and my father was an engineer at Metrovickers , Manchester working on Lancasters. He used to take me to the factory - at weekends I think - and I used to climb in and around the partly finished aircraft. The gun triggers were there and I used to "shoot up " the factory. He came home almost in tears once because one of his beloved planes , which had been dragged out for removal to Woodford, Cheshire, had been bombed flat.
As kids , we loved wartime and never feared the bombing. But that's kids !
