Interesting photo - no ventral fin, not a Pratt R-1340 and an interesting load which must have made directional control in the air "interesting" because carrying a spare float lashed to the side causes them to crab even with the ventral fin.

Above the engine nacelles, the big protruding volumes are not radiators, but condensers, as this floatplane was fitted with experimental Rolls-Royce Goshawk engines. The Goshawk were a steam-cooled version of the Kestrel. This peculiar design did not prove satisfactory....

Looking at these wonderfully, incredibly bleak photos reminds me of recently reading "Into the Endless Mist" about the Aleutians campaign. What a tough duty station. Man. It's hard to figure what was worse out of all the Pacific stations (other than Hawaii...) but this must have been a truly challenging if not utterly nightmarish posting.

The lack of colour was something I really noticed, both here and in Antarctica. It would be quite impactful on people based there for long periods.
