Hi there,

I am searching for the purpose of the hydraulic actuator located in the engine nose cowl, 2 o'clock ALF of the J2M aircraft.

On this image you can see a small drive shaft going from the actuator to the propellor shaft. Is it the prop pitch actuator?

FWIW

The propeller on the J2M1 prototype - and maybe a few of the pre-production J2M1 - was an electric type, but the production models all used a license produced VDM (I think). Maybe checking out VDM types would help answer the question.

In meantime the enlarged shots ....

PS .. and yes it looks like the actuator was for the prop pitch setting using a a hydraulic regulator (プロペラ油压原動機 - propeller hydraulic engine).

The Kasei engine drove a 3-bladed or 4-bladed Hamilton Standard-type constant-speed metal propeller. The constant-speed unit (CSU) operated as a hydraulic regulator. When the pilot selected a target RPM, the governor used pressurized engine oil to twist the propeller blades into a higher pitch (coarse) or lower pitch (fine) to maintain that engine speed, regardless of the aircraft's altitude, climb rate, or airspeed
