My Dad took this 35mm color slide at Shibuya Station in about 1949. I think this was the re-dedication of a new Hatchiko statue. The original was melted down during the war to recover the bronze.
This is unexpectedly very interesting picture, Neil.
Letters of the first line on the banner can be read like "皆さんポツダム宣言をどう考えますか? = Everyone, what do you think about the Potsdam Declaration?" I am curious what he was going to say like "Has our life got improved? Is our speech freedom guaranteed? Is our government working for us?". etc. etc. :)

"Should we have accepted the Potsdam Declaration?
The tight monetary policy, so-called Dodge Line which was invented by American economist Joseph Dodge, was imposed on Japanese economy in March, 1949. Japanese workers were to suffer from mass layoffs."

Japanese government uncontrollable around the Dodge Line in 1949.

Thank you for providing context to that photo, Shinpachi. It is much more meaningful now.

Global humanitarianism like "Save the Kurds" seems to be destroying the peace of a local town in Japan but the Japanese leading media like Asahi, Mainichi and TBS do not report them as Kurds.

It is well known that more than 1,200 Turkish nationality people aka Kurds are trouble makers in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Pref. which holds as many as 40,000 foreigners (half of them are from China) near Tokyo. The city has been suffering from Kurdish bad manners like repeatedly drove cars recklessly and harassed around materials storage areas and densely populated residential areas, causing many troubles resulting in injury or property damage. There have already been fatal incidents for years.

Media reports that, on the night of July 5, about 100 "Turkish" nationality foreigners gathered in front of the Kawaguchi city station and a brawl broke out. The trigger was an incident in which a "Turkish" man was cut by another "Turkish" man on the same night. A 45yo "Turkish" man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but the group, including the man, chased the victim in multiple cars before slashing him. After the incident, they gathered again at a hospital in the city where the victim was hospitalized and it developed into another brawl.

Up until last month, these Japanese media had been promoting "Save Kurds in Japan" campaign to oppose the revision of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act that was intended to deport unfavorable foreigners and enacted in the ordinary session of the Diet. Because the media used the Kurdish people for their political purposes, they are now obliged to hide the contradiction with the reality by not calling them "Kurds". Idealism does not help the reality.

Some countries in Europe are having the same problems. France, in particular, admitted many Muslims and now are suffering from the same problems. Those admitted from other countries are not always the best representatives of their culture. Our border problems are causing us grief as well.
