If I remember correctly, they're training in Sweden already, for the Gripen.
One does wonder why train in Canada, who doesn't fly either type, perhaps something is in the works.
That is, if the article is correct....

I think this is just the basic training and the use of the L-39 may be a factor as that is an airframe the Ukrainians are familiar with. Type training on the Gripen will be Sweden and on the F-16 a NATO member after the simulator training in Canada.

I wonder where Canada got the simulator from.

If Canada has facilities and agrees to cover the costs, why not? I assume that travel expenses are the smallest part of the whole budget. And Canada is safer than Europe. Hopefully.
As I remember, RAAF crews were trained in Canada before being sent to the UK during WWII. There are interesting books written by Don Charlwood.

The Commonwealth Air Training Plan is one of the forgotten success stories of WW2. It massively increased air training capacity across the globe, with schools established everywhere that was away from the fighting: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Rhodesia, South Africa, and even in the US (I'm almost certainly missing some of the nations that participated).

It was phenomenally successful, training crews from all over the world. It enabled to creation of the 1 million man RAF, plus hugely increased sizes of the RAAF, RCAF, RNZAF and RSAF.
