Polystyrene has an M.P. of about 240C (464F) seems unlikely a 1mm bulb at 1.5 v could draw much amperage or generate that much heat but ??? Might be worth a test especially on those tiny rear lights

The M.P. depends of the kind of polystyrene and usually says at what temperature it becomes liquid or just being destroyed.. Unfortunately the one used for plastic models starts getting squashy at about 65-70C and loosing its shape . Therefore at the 100-110C you may mould, stretch and bend it. So the test you mentioned seems to be a good idea.

There's a UK company by the name of JS Miniatures, who supply 'small scale lights' for many modelling purposes, and can offer advice.
Sorry I don't have their details to hand.

Jan, a nice, small bulb for the purpose you mentioned can be found in old electronic wristwatches. a such bulb was used for lightening up of the digital displayer at night. So if you can get a couple of damaged watches , often without their cases , at the flea market the cost won't be huge.
