I didn't know the Beaufighter handled bad on the ground,

Yup, mainly the position of the engines so far forward. Didn't do much for visibility to the side, but in general visibility ahead was good. I was in communication with a former Beaufighter crew many years ago - sadly now deceased and for tyro pilots training on things like the Oxford and Blenheim for twin time, transitioning to the Beaufighter was a big step.

The Beaufighter II with Merlins was a real handful and resulted in a series of ground loops and handling errors in service, one pilot describing it as a "devil" on the ground. That to add to the general practise of night fighting in late 1940 through 1941 being fraught with danger when the RAF is learning techniques. One of the training OTUs, No.54 was based at an airfield called Charterhall in Northumberland, its regular aircraft were Defiants and Beaufighter IIs and it earned the name "Slaughter Hall" because of the high casualty rate.
