Modern Aircraft Carrier Base

Hey guys,

I'm planning on getting either a Super Hornet or an A-7, and would like to do a diorama of it landing. I'd like to make the base myself to avoid paying an arm and a leg for one, and that way I can get exactly what I want as well. Does anyone have any idea how I would go about doing this? Mainly what material I should cover it with?

I'd get a sheet of plastic card and stick it to a plywood base. You can glue stuff to it, cut shapes into it and scribe all kinds of details into it. And it's nice and smooth for paint.

I normally use MDF for the base, as it's more stable and easier to work than ply. Coverings are (paper) card, the type used for mounting art work. This again is easier to cut, texture with paint, and adheres easier and better with ordinary PVA.
