I've clearly reached an age where many of the musicians I listened to as a young lad about town, and who are not that many years older then me, have started to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Today I read that Burke Shelley of Welsh band Budgie has moved on.

Budgie were one of the first bands I paid to see live. They were not well known outside the UK, and were never mega stars here, but it is safe to say that they influenced many rock musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. What might be considered their signature tune, 'Breadfan', has been covered by no lesser luminaries than Metallica, among others.

Burke died in hospital in his home town of Cardiff. He was 71 years old.

I've never liked his music (I find it overwrought myself) but the brotha was able to carve out a career in one of the more brutal industries we have.

He's also a fellow native of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Glad he was able to live the good life thanks to some deep lungs.
