_ADP5608

Aircraft airside. Special colour scheme for this Oregon ANG F-15C honouring bombardier David Kingsley, for which the unit's home station is named, and the B-17 he was aboard, named "Sandman". Well go into this history further when I post photos of the F-15's display.

_ADP5533

A couple of F/A-18Fs of VFA122 that took part in the flying displays.

_ADP5536

Finally, some Warthog action. The A-10 is a great aircraft to photograph. This is Maj Lindsey "Mad" Johnson in the Black Snake liveried A-10C of the Indiana ANG. Johnson is the A-10 Demo Pilot for the USAF this season. Note the honor flag inside the windshield.

_ADP5525

_ADP5534

_ADP5548

This A-10C is wearing a special South East Asia scheme representing F-105 Thunderchief "Memphis Belle II" of the 375th Fighter Sqn during Vietnam and is named "Memphis Belle III".

_ADP5528

_ADP5529

_ADP5531

Next, my first photos of air racing...

Cheers guys. Some air racing now, albeit briefly. The one thing I figured out pretty quickly is that from the crowdline you are quite far from the action and even with my big lens the results were not great. The other factor that made photographing the racing from the public areas was the heat haze. It was haht! And there was a lot of heat haze, spoiling the photos. Some T-6 action.

_ADP5555

In these two shots from left, we see Race 5 "Big Red", Race 50 "Abracadabra", Race 88 "Radial Velocity", Race 6 "Six Cat", and Race 66 "Gunslinger".

_ADP5557

Gunslinger and Six Cat.

_ADP5563

Radial Velocity and Six Cat.

_ADP5567

Our previous lineup with Six Cat, third from left in the lead.

_ADP5573

They get plenty low... Six Cat and Radial Velocity for the one-two...

_ADP5583

I didn't get many images of the racing from the crowd line, it was just too difficult, so I reserved my photographing of the action for when I went out to the pylons, although later in the day I was hanging around on the flightline and got some of the jets whizzing past. For now, on the subject of the T-6s, some of the competitors in the pits. The models that compete in the T-6 Class are a mixed bag of types. This is SNJ-5 Race 49 "Miss Ellaneous" flown by Bill Muzala.

_ADP6012

T-6D Race 999 flown by Job Savage.

_ADP6014

Former South African Air Force Harvard Mk.IIa Race 21 "Play Hard" flown by Ben York III.

_ADP6015

SNJ-5 Race 88 "Radial Velocity" flown by John Lohmar.

_ADP6016

Radial Velocity's impressive score sheet.

_ADP6017

former Royal Canadian Air Force Harvard Mk.II Race 66 "Gunslinger" flown by Vic McMann.

_ADP6018

AT-6 Race 388 "EZ Six" flown by Aaron Singer.

_ADP6020

SNJ-5 Race 25 "Vicarious" flown by Jason Karlin.

_ADP6021

T-6G Race 48 "The Other Woman" flown by Brian Reberry.

_ADP6022

Next up, some more Unlimiteds in the pits, then some flightline action...

Haneda AFB, Tokyo 1948- my sister Kathy and me.
44-81645/82769 North American AT-6F-NT Texan

82527 (MSN 121-43249) 317th Transport Group, Fifth Air Force, Tachikawa AB, Tokyo, Japan. Damaged landing at Tachikawa AB 23Oct46. 13th Air Service Group, Fifth Air Force,
Tachikawa AB, Tokyo, Japan. Damaged landing at Itami AB 17Jan48. To Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF).

Thank you. Amazing knowledge on this forum!

Great stuff! always great to hear your recollections, Manta. So, more from the Unlimiteds, firstly with a walk around the pits then out on the flightline. We start with former RCAF Kittyhawk I AK933, P-40E to the locals, Race 18 "Sneak Attack", flown by Jim Thomas. This aircraft was, for awhile in the 1980s based at Duxford with the Old Flying Machine Company.

_ADP5732

Years ago as a youngster I had a picture book on Duxford and it had a shot taken from this exact angle in it. Never did I think I would have the opportunity to take the exact same photograph.

_ADP5731

The right side of the rudder is carefully and accurately depicted...

_ADP5730

Here's one for Peter Gunn, P-51C Race 19 "Boise Bee" flown by John Maloney.

_ADP5733

_ADP6074

The much-celebrated "Miss America" spent a lot of time in the pits with its cowl off, but did race in the heats over the weekend. Flown by Brent Hisey.

_ADP6048

Race 75 "Lady Jo" flown by John Muszala II.

_ADP6031

The shiny "Bunny".

_ADP6028

The line up of Furies. Race 924 was the one powered by a Bristol Centaurus.

_ADP6033

Race 4 "Sweet & Lovely" flown by Jeff La Velle.

_ADP6042

Race 81 "Wee Willy II" flown by Rob Patterson.

_ADP6043

Race 0 "Spam Can/Dolly" flown by Mark Moodie.

_ADP6044

Race 69 "Miss Marvel" flown by Jim Rust being moved out onto the ramp.

_ADP6026

Now, I haven't devoted any photo time to the smaller competitors, the Sport or Formula One categories because of my lack of interest in them from a photographic perspective. The Formula One aircraft were real small and combined with the difficulties of photographing them from the crowdline, I left them off the roster of photographs. My heart lay with the big boys... To placate tho, here's a Sport Category entrant, Lancair 360 Race 55 "Unleashed" flown by Nick Biondo. I will put Sport photos up from the pylon trips, as they surprised me the most in how tight they flew.

_ADP6011

A few photos out on the ramp. That iconic finishing line.

_ADP5807

"Spam Can"

_ADP5871

"Pretty Polly"

_ADP5875

Finally for today, "Thunderbird".

_ADP5856

Next, some airshow action and jets around the course.

Continuing with the flying display, which began with a single C-130J of the Nevada Air National Guard, "the High Rollers" based at Stead, and a cargo drop...

_ADP5747

_ADP5753

Some jet racing action. I managed to capture a little of the racing from where I was on the crowd line, although the same complaints from earlier apply. Texas Fouga.

_ADP5900

L-29 Race 61 "Miss Independance" - Aussies, can't spell - flown by Tammy Camilleri.

_ADP5902

L-29 Race 55, the ironically named "Spirit of Freedom" while dressed in Soviet colours, flown by Nathan Harnagel.

_ADP5904

L-39 Race 84 "Tumbling Goose" flown by Scott Gusakov [geddit? Tumbling Goose?].

_ADP5906

L-39 Race 8 flown by David Sterling.

_ADP5907

L-39 Pace jet Race 555.

_ADP5908

Tumbling Goose, Race 12 "Alpine Thunder" and Race 8 tight through the turn.

_ADP5978

Tumbling Goose catching up to Alpine Thunder...

_ADP5982

Miss Independance and Texas Fouga turning onto the straight...

_ADP5997

Spirit of Freedom catching up.

_ADP5987

Lastly, the Dassault Falcon 8X demo. The Falcon 8X is a jet dear to me. At Avalon earlier in the year I did some work for Dassault Civil Aircraft and was handsomely rewarded with a seat on board the company demonstrator from Australia to New Zealand. If I could afford such an extravagance as a business jet, it would be a Falcon 8X. The display at Reno was done with precision, as expected, which highlighted the grace of the jet.

_ADP5852

Impressive short field take off...

_ADP5893

...followed by steep climb out. The fly-by-wire system has been developed from that of the Dassault Rafale fighter.

_ADP5894

At height the Falcon 8X is capable of impressive performance, Mach .9 at an altitude of 51,000 feet across a range of 6,450 nm.

_ADP5911

That wing is all composite and is fitted with high-lift devices to enable short field operations.

_ADP5928

The Falcon 8X can carry 14 people in considerable comfort, with what is touted by Dassault as the quietest cabin of any business jet.

_ADP7086

Why three engines? Executive Vice President Dassault Civil Aircraft, Carlos Brana told me, "the configuration enables the 8X increased flexibility and performance, and across long ranges, ETOPS considerations don't apply."

_ADP5960[/url

Dassault reckons that the Falcon 8X is 15 percent more fuel efficient than its nearest competitor, which is good for those environmentally conscious CEOs.

_ADP5974

That's it for today. Next, the final post for Thursday and more Unlimited Action.

Nice to see all the good stuff under cover instead of out in the rain at Meola Rd.
