There was almost instant vocal, bureaucratic, Park Service and financial opposition.
He and the cadre of dedicated stalwarts are to be commended for persevering. My part was modest, but remains a point of pride. I was surprised and uncertain about Maya Lin's design, but came to realize a traditional memorial just wouldn't be right. Now, there are dozens of replicas throughout the nation!
It should be noted that the Viet Nam Memorial broke the logjam of opposition to other Veteran memorials on the Mall, especially for the Korean War and WWII memorials.
