I think perhaps maritime patrol was really the forte of the B-24, though it didn't have great ditching characteristics, it's very long range and endurance, and large bomb load were all helpful in this role.
During the war in Indochina, the French Navy Privateers pilots did not hesitate to perform low level strike bombing and straffing (twelve .50 MGs were too tempting not to use).
But it is true it was considered as difficult to handle.
