P-40N wooden cockpit structure

Hi there,

Below is a photo of a WASP in the cockpit of a P-40N which has a wooden structure of some sort behind the head rest. Would anyone happen to know what it is for?

It's a container made in .125 Douglas plywood and white pine - yellow poplar could be used.
It as finished with two coat clear sealer.
On the rear, left side it was stencilled black letters .50 high, .20 interlining.
