P-47 size comparison.

We all know that the P-47 was a large aircraft, but this shows it wasn't just big, it was huge !
Note in particular its size compared to the Bf-109G.

Now we need a chart showing the F6F, The F4U, the Typhoon and Tempest/Fury.

Just got back to the hotel from Le Bourget. They have a P-47 and a P-51 next to each other. The Mustang is not a small aircraft, but the P-47 wins on sheer cchunkiness and the huge open frontal area.

Also in the room are a Fw190, a Spitfire, and a Dewoitine D.520. The D.520 is petit.

However, all size comparisons are thrown off by the presence of a 3-seat A-1 Skywalker Skyraider. That airplane is just freaking huge--it looks as though you could stash the Jug inside it.

There's a C-47 overhead, but that still doesn't make the Skyraider look small ...

I may be wrong, but were not some of the 4-seaters reconfigured to 3-seaters in order to provide room for more EW/ELINT equipment? They still used the same 4-seater canopy & such.

There was a transport version of the A-1, designated UA-1E, where it could seat up to 12 troops.
It could also carry VIPs, wounded or cargo, too.

I've not seen total volume referred to, wetted area and cross-sectional area are though which obviously impact on volume.
