on exercise in Germany, my oppo and I were picked as stretcher bearers during an attack.
picked up a casualty with light wounds to run down to the first aid tent, half way there chemical attack alert is sounded.
so on with NBC suit, respirator etc and leg it to the first aid post.
get there all hot and sweaty to be told casualty is dead " no he is just wounded " we argue, "he's dead " were told, " how do you know ? "i argue.

"you dickheads didnt put his NBC suit on ! "

"shit, sorry mate" i say

"thanks Rochie" he says

I'll just share this here because I think it is one of the best movie introductory scenes that I've ever seen. The images are stark; the music slowly builds up and this all presents a "prequel" to the story following. This movie "Heartbreak Ridge" isn't about Heartbreak Ridge, that term refers to a savage battle fought in Korea years before but it is part of Clint Eastwood's character's past experience in this movie. The ending is poignant, perhaps the best depiction of a professional soldier's (or Marine's) coming home from a combat deployment. Have a look:

DBII's story brought to mind an incident involving a USAFA cadet in 1960 if I am correct. That year was the Air Force Academy turn to escort the Miss America contestants. One of the cadets chosen as an escort turned out to be engaged to two young ladies from different states who happened to win their pageants to compete for Miss America. The story heard post contest was that he had been making time with the lady he was to escort when he found out the two he was engaged to were at the contest. The comments among the troops was, "He sure had good taste."

I guess you don't want to hear about my week leave and the Air Force Cpt type female nurse I meet. My last 6 months in country was exhausting. Me in Fulda and her in Weisbauden (?).

Have you ever been to the Dolly Bar or Fischerstube in Frankfurt down near the Haupt Bahnhof? Angelika & Ursula?

Can it be 61 years since this photo was taken of me standing in front of the Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin? Yep, February 1962. Where did the time go?

No, but it sounds like I missed something! :D

First trip to Graph I keep hearing we have to see Margaret the Fire Lady at the O club. We were all in our 20s and she was 42. Margaret made the rounds between the Nco and Officers clubs between the major training areas, Grafenwoehr , Vilseck and Hohenfels. After a week of tank tables and mass bordom, the then LTC Abrams, we called him son of tank, had an spur call at the O club for just our Sdrn. Yes I met Margaret the Fire Lady, she was 🔥. A body builder stripper. OMG this young Lt had never seen such a site. On post so she had cloth but not much. Flamming batons, breathing fire. High school twirlers could not match her. Lap dancing. And the cold cream she smeared all over the Ltc glasses so he could not see what she was doing. I don't know if was mad for the dirty glasses or because he could not watch. She had a way with worlds. The trash that came out of her mouth. It was not fit for humans but perfect for the Cavalry. She would in her 80s today. We tried to get her for the Regt Dinning In but sadly she was booked.

1969 Cold War, West Germany, Bundeswehr NATO Allies training on their ranges with their weapons. Machine Gun MG3, Rifle H&K (early) G3. Both same 7.62mm ammo as our M-60 and M-14. They could have long hair, we could not! I liked their Commie target.
