my photos of a T-28 that had a bad moment at my home airport. The pilot touched down and promptly developed a nasty nose wheel shimmy.
The T-28 has a pronounced negative angle of incidence on the gear and they can get the shimmy, fail the gear, flip over and give the trapped crew a roasting.
The pilot chose to retract the gear.

The front end and gear reduction snapped off and departed, and the aircraft started a small fire in the grass along the runway.

Looks like it went left as it went. There was a little burn through in the lower cowl but not a full on conflagration.

The left wing took a beating and it would be better to start with a donor wing IMO.

From the look of that crank shaft extension he was not far from an engine problem that could have been far more serious if he was flying over an area lacking a good landing spot.
