The tank on the Left wing does not have the characteristic seam of the flat steel tank, as seen on the tank of the Right wing as well on as the belly tank of Col Schilling's rocket-equipped P-47. Back when I built that first release of the Monogram 1/48 P-47D, I wondered if they ever mounted that special "flat" drop tank clearly designed to fit under the Jug's belly out on the wing pylons. Well, here is a nice shot of a 56 FG P-47D with a flat drop tank on one wing pylon and a different type of drop tank on the other pylon.View attachment 812057
Caption in the book says it was Boxted. Note that there do not seem to be any Invasion Stripes, but they could have been removed. And as for time of year, how often do you see shots taken in England that they are not wearing warm clothing? Remember that those guys most probably were up most of the night.Photo was taken at Boxted, from memory around September 1944.
